And today I am truly going to dive deep into helping you shift your mindset to embrace the CEO inside of you as a business owner and make it less scary and get to a place where you feel like, well, God damn, yes, yes, I am the damn CEO.

Speaker A:

Right?

Speaker A:

Like, that's what I want you to think of.

Speaker A:

Like, I want you to own that title in your business more than any other title than you have, right?

Speaker A:

So many of you are extremely skilled professionals, right?

Speaker A:

And I hear it all the time.

Speaker A:

I'm just a graphic designer or I'm a parent coach or I'm just a website designer.

Speaker A:

I've never been a business owner or I don't know business or I'm this or I'm that.

Speaker A:

Here's the thing, you get to be both.

Speaker A:

Okay?

Speaker A:

You are a skilled professional and if you now run a business solo or not, you are a CEO.

Speaker A:

And so the first myth that I want to dispel a bit is that CEOs are only for large corporate businesses.

Speaker A:

That is so far from the truth.

Speaker A:

It's not, it's not at all relevant.

Speaker A:

Every single business, if you are a business owner, then you or somebody else in your business is the CEO or plays the role of CEO.

Speaker A:

Okay?

Speaker A:

The role of CEO can be scaled to fit businesses of any size.

Speaker A:

Right?

Speaker A:

And so it doesn't really matter whether you're a party of one or whether you have a team of 300, right?

Speaker A:

You can adapt that role to fit your business size in what it is right now.

Speaker A:

And as your business grows, the role grows, right?

Speaker A:

So that's just the thing.

Speaker A:

It's, you know, the, the Pieces or the, the job perspective of what a CEO offers is really no different than if you said, oh well, I'm a business owner, right?

Speaker A:

Okay, so let's just even break down what are the responsibilities or expectations of a CEO in a perfect world in the job market?

Speaker A:

Like how would they break that down?

Speaker A:

So a CEO is responsible for casting the vision and creating a strategy, setting long term visions, strategies and goals for the vis the business.

Speaker A:

What are your values?

Speaker A:

What are the things that you value?

Speaker A:

What is the mission?

Speaker A:

Why are you here and what is your long term vision for the company?

Speaker A:

Tell me right now that as a business owner you don't do that, right?

Speaker A:

If I said to you what is your why?

Speaker A:

Why are you doing this?

Speaker A:

What is your mission?

Speaker A:

You would be able to tell me that.

Speaker A:

Okay, check the box.

Speaker A:

Number one, there's your first.

Speaker A:

There's your first CEO role.

Speaker A:

Okay?

Speaker A:

Number two, decision making.

Speaker A:

High level decisions about policies, strategies, data, risk, benefits, long term impacts.

Speaker A:

You make decisions every single day that are for the benefit of your business, right?

Speaker A:

You make decisions every day of what are you going to do?

Speaker A:

How are you going to handle this client?

Speaker A:

What should you invest in?

Speaker A:

What should your offers be?

Speaker A:

How are you going to price this?

Speaker A:

You know, what's the goals here?

Speaker A:

Why are we doing this?

Speaker A:

You make those decisions, right?

Speaker A:

You are a decision maker.

Speaker A:

You are the business owner.

Speaker A:

Maybe you have a partner that helps you, maybe you have a spouse, maybe you have a biz bestie, maybe you have other a coach or somebody that may help you or a strategist, something of that sort.

Speaker A:

But at the end of the day, the decision is yours, right?

Speaker A:

You get to make the decisions.

Speaker A:

Check.

Speaker A:

Check number two in your CEO inner CEO box.

Speaker A:

Okay.

Speaker A:

Number three, financial oversight.

Speaker A:

Managing the financial health of your business.

Speaker A:

Do you make financial decisions?

Speaker A:

Do you look and see how much money's coming in versus how much money is going out?

Speaker A:

I mean this is not even being able to say like that you could overanalyze a p and l.

Speaker A:

I'm not even talking about that, right?

Speaker A:

Like there's people and professionals wore that financial professional, professionals.

Speaker A:

But at the end of the day, you oversee the financial benefit, the financial responsibility of the company.

Speaker A:

You make those financial decisions.

Speaker A:

Again, it comes down to decision making, but at the, you make the decisions on how you spend your money, how you receive money, right?

Speaker A:

So there you go.

Speaker A:

Check number three in your inner CEO box.

Speaker A:

And then let's talk about leadership, leading and inspiring your team, even if you don't have employees.

Speaker A:

And yes, if it sounds like I'm reading this off of I am.

Speaker A:

I have a list, right?

Speaker A:

Because I was like, I want to actually go through and see like, what would the role be?

Speaker A:

Because so many people say I don't, you know, I don't know anything about business or I'm not a CEO, okay?

Speaker A:

So I was like, I'm going to get the exact definition of it and then I'm going to break it down into terms that solopreneurs and small business owners relate to.

Speaker A:

So leadership.

Speaker A:

How many of you say, like, well, I don't have a team, but if you've ever hired a contractor, so maybe you've hired a CPA because you don't understand your financials, you don't understand your profit and loss, right?

Speaker A:

You're leading them by saying, here's what I'm looking for.

Speaker A:

If you've ever hired a VA or a graphic designer or a web designer, a coach, if you've hired anybody in your business that has done anything for you or helped you along in some way, you've owned that role of here's, here's who I am as a business owner.

Speaker A:

Here's what I'm struggling with, here's what I need your help with, here's how I can present it, right?

Speaker A:

So you do play a leadership role, whether or not you have employees.

Speaker A:

And so many times we think we're not leaders.

Speaker A:

Even if you're a thought leader, right, like you are, you play a leadership role to your clients.

Speaker A:

If you're serving clients, you are leading them.

Speaker A:

You are leading them.

Speaker A:

So you hold a leadership position to people that hire you.

Speaker A:

They've hired you because they believe in you, they want to be led by you.

Speaker A:

So even if you don't have employees, you are still in a leadership role every day when clients work with you.

Speaker A:

Okay?

Speaker A:

Check number four in your inner CEO box.

Speaker A:

And then operations management.

Speaker A:

Overseeing the day to day operations to be sure they're in alignment with your company's goals.

Speaker A:

You get to make all those decisions, right?

Speaker A:

You've set the action plan.

Speaker A:

You know what actions you're taking.

Speaker A:

You, you know where you're at.

Speaker A:

You're running the operations, you're running the day in, the day out, right?

Speaker A:

You're running your business, you're overseeing that.

Speaker A:

You're looking at the actions, whether you're delegating or you're doing them all yourself.

Speaker A:

Operations management is you, right?

Speaker A:

So even if you're a party of one, there's check number four in your CEO box.

Speaker A:

Okay, so.

Speaker A:

Or five, I guess that was check number five.

Speaker A:

I'm sorry.

Speaker A:

So we've got vision and strategy, decision making, financials, leadership and operations.

Speaker A:

Okay, so those are just in general.

Speaker A:

Hopefully by now you're going well.

Speaker A:

Yeah, shit, yes, absolutely.

Speaker A:

I am a fucking CEO, right?

Speaker A:

And I want you to stop being so scared of it.

Speaker A:

It's my mission, if I'm telling you my mission as a CEO, my mission is to stop having people be afraid of these corporate terms because business is business.

Speaker A:

We have gotten so tainted by negatives of corporations, but those corporations have been the foundation of business for years, right?

Speaker A:

There is a reason that they operate the way they do.

Speaker A:

There is a reason Starbucks is so successful.

Speaker A:

There is a reason Target is so successful, right?

Speaker A:

Because they have these roles in their companies.

Speaker A:

And so, yes, they are big, large companies.

Speaker A:

But even as your small companies, your small salon that you love, right, there's an owner in there that makes all of those decisions.

Speaker A:

And this is just the basis, the foundation of what it takes to own a business, right?

Speaker A:

So we have to stop being scared by it, we have to stop being intimidated by it.

Speaker A:

We have to stop having a negative taste in our mouth.

Speaker A:

And we have to start embracing the fact that, yes, we have gone into this journey as business owners, and as business owners, there is now a shift, a mindset shift that needs to happen, that we need to start embracing these other titles as well, because those titles are what is going to make your business grow.

Speaker A:

Those decisions, those actions, those, those roles, those are the things that create the growth, that propel your growth, whether you maintain a party of one or hire a team.

Speaker A:

Okay?

Speaker A:

So I want you to start moving from seeing yourself as a skilled professional, Just a skilled professional.

Speaker A:

And if you've used that language and I'm saying, you know, I'm not saying that negatively when I say, oh, you're.

Speaker A:

I'm just a graphic designer, I'm just a website designer.

Speaker A:

I'm just.

Speaker A:

This, this is not.

Speaker A:

This is language I hear on an everyday basis out of almost every client, out of almost every person I talk to.

Speaker A:

So I'm not saying that negatively.

Speaker A:

Do not think discrediting any of you.

Speaker A:

I'm usually the one going, yeah, and you're also a business owner, right?

Speaker A:

You get to embrace that, step into that role because you have more than your skill, right?

Speaker A:

We, we get so wrapped up in the skills, our training of the thing that we are charging money for that we, that's the only identity we own.

Speaker A:

All right?

Speaker A:

But you get to kind of start to transition.

Speaker A:

So when you're introducing, I'm a business Owner.

Speaker A:

When people say, what do you do?

Speaker A:

Oh, I'm just a graphic designer.

Speaker A:

Well, I own my own business and I offer graphic design services.

Speaker A:

I own my own business and I offer consulting services.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

Like, I am a business owner.

Speaker A:

I'm the CEO of my company, and our.

Speaker A:

My company offers graphic design services.

Speaker A:

Think about that.

Speaker A:

Like, change the way you introduce yourself.

Speaker A:

What do you do, Michelle, tell me more about your business.

Speaker A:

I'd love to.

Speaker A:

I'm the CEO of my company.

Speaker A:

My company's name is Michelle Denial Consulting.

Speaker A:

And we offer business growth and strategic planning and growth consulting to help businesses grow and scale their business.

Speaker A:

Whatever.

Speaker A:

I use the word business way too many times in there just because I'm speaking off the cuff.

Speaker A:

I'm like, that sounded terrible.

Speaker A:

Business, business, business.

Speaker A:

But, you know, thinking about it from that perspective, right?

Speaker A:

Like when you introduce yourself, I mean, think about the confidence.

Speaker A:

Remember I did that, that episode two or three weeks ago, depending on when you're listening to this was several.

Speaker A:

I'll link it.

Speaker A:

But on Confident cells, right?

Speaker A:

And think of the difference.

Speaker A:

When you introduce yourself to somebody, it's like, oh, well, tell me what you do.

Speaker A:

Oh, I'm a graphic designer.

Speaker A:

Oh, I'm just a web designer.

Speaker A:

Oh, I'm a copywriter.

Speaker A:

No, I am the CEO of my company.

Speaker A:

My company offers copywriting services.

Speaker A:

Just because you happen to be the copywriter doesn't mean that you're not also the CEO, right?

Speaker A:

And so if somebody said that to you, like, think about in the corporate world, which we are so negative, but if somebody said to you, oh, I'm the CEO of a Fortune 500 company, you're like, wow, well, what company, right?

Speaker A:

Like, you immediately when somebody owns that title, you think, wow, big bucks, high roller.

Speaker A:

Like, wow, They're.

Speaker A:

They're at the top of the food chain, right?

Speaker A:

You are the top of the food chain in your business.

Speaker A:

So start owning that.

Speaker A:

Embrace it.

Speaker A:

Don't be intimidated by it, okay?

Speaker A:

And the thing about it is, with the CEO role, too, is it's just about being proactive versus reactive.

Speaker A:

So think about when you are in your skill, right?

Speaker A:

In my skill of business, my skill happens to be business, right?

Speaker A:

That is my skill.

Speaker A:

Business knowledge, business growth, CEO, all the CEO, things like that is my skill.

Speaker A:

So in a sense, it's very easy for me to own this role.

Speaker A:

But even though I offer those services to other people in their business, and that's what I consult on, that's what I help with, is the strategic planning, the leadership, the decision making, right?

Speaker A:

I still have to do that all for my own company as well.

Speaker A:

All right.

Speaker A:

But the difference is, is that when you are owning, when you're in the role and you've got your CEO hat on, you're making proactive decisions, right?

Speaker A:

You're looking ahead, you're planning accordingly, you're doing some strategic planning, you're looking ahead at long term vis your.

Speaker A:

Everything is proactive when you are in your skilled profession.

Speaker A:

When you have that hat on as your skilled profession, you're in a very reactive state, right?

Speaker A:

You're 90% of the time, you're reacting to a client need, a client emergency, you're working on a client project, you're.

Speaker A:

You're reacting to tasks.

Speaker A:

It's very task based, right?

Speaker A:

You're thinking of that.

Speaker A:

So think about that.

Speaker A:

Is like when you're working on your business, CEO hat, right?

Speaker A:

If you have a CEO day, which I really encourage everybody to schedule a CEO day where you just get to work on those things.

Speaker A:

And if you need to list out those five things and just every day or once a week, like on your CEO day, or maybe you even only do this once a month, but you look at and you think, okay, what can I look at ahead of the game?

Speaker A:

What do I need to look at for the next month ahead?

Speaker A:

What am I looking at for the next quarter ahead?

Speaker A:

Is there something I need to kind of be looking at for the next year ahead?

Speaker A:

Whatever it is, right?

Speaker A:

But like in those moments, like leadership, how am I doing with my team?

Speaker A:

Is there anything I really owe my team?

Speaker A:

Do I need to do a meeting with them, my clients, am I leading them?

Speaker A:

Well, financial, where are we at financially?

Speaker A:

When's the last time you looked at your financials?

Speaker A:

Do you bat a blind eye at them or do you actually take the time to look at them?

Speaker A:

You know, those.

Speaker A:

Just give yourself a day to put that hat on.

Speaker A:

I'm not saying that you have to have that hat on every single day.

Speaker A:

It would be exhausting.

Speaker A:

It would be exhausting to try to be the CEO every single day, all day long, and also be the professional, the skilled professional that people are paying you for.

Speaker A:

That would be extremely exhausting.

Speaker A:

So put the hat on a couple days a month.

Speaker A:

That's it, right?

Speaker A:

Like, just understand that you don't have to do it all, all the time, right?

Speaker A:

But just understand that you are the CEO and part of that is just owning the successes in any challenge that comes.

Speaker A:

And you do that, you do that on an everyday basis, right?

Speaker A:

You own when something is a win.

Speaker A:

You own that when a challenge comes up.

Speaker A:

You own that.

Speaker A:

How many times have we.

Speaker A:

I see it all the time.

Speaker A:

This vulnerability in people where we own our.

Speaker A:

You know, when we mess up.

Speaker A:

Like I did an episode a coup weeks ago on or whatever, maybe it was last week on, you know, confusing my audience.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

It's a challenge.

Speaker A:

I'm owning that challenge.

Speaker A:

And it's something I'm working really hard on.

Speaker A:

But it's one of those things where, like, you're just taking ownership.

Speaker A:

You take ownership for the good, bad and indifferent, the wins, the losses, the challenges, the.

Speaker A:

The things that go easy and the things that come hard.

Speaker A:

That's all it really is.

Speaker A:

That's all it means to be the CEO.

Speaker A:

Okay.

Speaker A:

That's.

Speaker A:

It is just embracing all of that.

Speaker A:

And so I want to wrap this episode up by giving you a couple things that can help you to give yourself evidence.

Speaker A:

Give yourself evidence.

Speaker A:

If you're still listening to this and going, yeah, Michelle, but I don't know.

Speaker A:

I don't know if I've got that.

Speaker A:

I don't know.

Speaker A:

I still don't know if I really like this title.

Speaker A:

And the reality is, is that you don't have to.

Speaker A:

I'm going to give you a perfect example.

Speaker A:

I have a client who I really told.

Speaker A:

I've been working with her for a long time, and I keep telling her, you've got to step in and be the CEO.

Speaker A:

You've got to lead your team a little bit better.

Speaker A:

They're needing you.

Speaker A:

They need you to step in.

Speaker A:

They need you to stop being the professional like that other people pay for.

Speaker A:

And they need you to run this business.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

And so for a couple months, she went through.

Speaker A:

She's in my focus Visionary program.

Speaker A:

We've been working together for years.

Speaker A:

And she finally said to me, michelle, I hate this role.

Speaker A:

I hate it.

Speaker A:

I don't want to be the.

Speaker A:

I don't want to be the CEO.

Speaker A:

It's not my skill set.

Speaker A:

I don't enjoy it.

Speaker A:

I get too wrapped up.

Speaker A:

I get, you know, I start to overthink everything.

Speaker A:

This is just not where I shine.

Speaker A:

I like being on the doing.

Speaker A:

I like being in the business.

Speaker A:

I don't like all of these other pieces.

Speaker A:

I don't want to do all of these things.

Speaker A:

And it was such a beautiful realization for her because it gave her the permission to stop and hire it.

Speaker A:

And so she hired me as more of a fractional CEO in her business.

Speaker A:

And so I do that.

Speaker A:

I am there.

Speaker A:

I'm the one that she says when she's struggling to make a decision, it comes to Me.

Speaker A:

And she says, I just need you to make the decision on this.

Speaker A:

Okay, Done.

Speaker A:

Right.

Speaker A:

And so also understanding that this, this position, quote unquote, is not for everybody and not everybody, you can embrace it by part of embracing it is also understanding that this is not where I excel.

Speaker A:

This is not what I enjoy doing.

Speaker A:

Right?

Speaker A:

And I, that's okay.

Speaker A:

So part of even embracing that is looking at it and going, I can do it, but I don't want to.

Speaker A:

Right?

Speaker A:

And if that's the case, then who can you bring out?

Speaker A:

Do you need to bring on a fractional CEO like myself or do you need to bring on an OBM or something like that?

Speaker A:

Like somebody that can kind of maintain that management position and as your business grows, but if you're just starting out, there's no need to even think about hiring this position.

Speaker A:

But as your business grows, it may be something that you say, you know what, I don't want these responsibilities anymore.

Speaker A:

And you pass it off.

Speaker A:

But let's also too, let's give you some evidence that you truly are the CEO of your business and you're going to start embracing this inner badass, inner CEO.

Speaker A:

And I want you to even try to introduce yourself that way.

Speaker A:

But think about it like, where have you made decisions for the betterment of your company, right?

Speaker A:

Ask yourself that.

Speaker A:

Like, write it down.

Speaker A:

These are some questions that you can journal on is like, where have I made decisions for the betterment of my company?

Speaker A:

Maybe it was in releasing a client, maybe it was in raising your prices, maybe it was in what services you would offer.

Speaker A:

Maybe it was in saying no to a financial, like a, a program or something that you knew would not benefit you financially.

Speaker A:

Maybe it was in investing financially into something that was for the better.

Speaker A:

Where have you made decisions if you were the sole decision maker that for the betterment of your company?

Speaker A:

Congrats, you are the CEO.

Speaker A:

Okay?

Speaker A:

When have you set goals and created a plan to achieve that?

Speaker A:

Have you been in the Focus Visionary or any of my business plan programs for the past six years?

Speaker A:

Congrats, you're a CEO.

Speaker A:

Have you been in any goal setting program in your business?

Speaker A:

Congrats, you are the CEO, right?

Speaker A:

Have you set goals for yourself and held yourself accountable?

Speaker A:

Congrats, you're the CEO, right?

Speaker A:

Like, think about that.

Speaker A:

Like, do you cast a vision?

Speaker A:

Do you, do you know the vision for your company?

Speaker A:

Do you have a mission?

Speaker A:

Do you have your why?

Speaker A:

Congrats, you're the CEO, right?

Speaker A:

Thinking about these things, journal on them, give yourself evidence, and every single time you make A decision.

Speaker A:

I want you to start tracking that, I want you to start journaling it, and I want you to create a list that says, my CEO.

Speaker A:

My CEO, Embracing my inner CEO.

Speaker A:

Make your list.

Speaker A:

Embracing my inner CEO.

Speaker A:

And every time you make a decision, every time you set a goal, every time you create an action plan, right?

Speaker A:

Anytime you lead a client and they say, God, I couldn't have done that without you, or thank you so much for your leadership.

Speaker A:

Done, Right?

Speaker A:

Start giving yourself the evidence.

Speaker A:

Okay?

Speaker A:

Have you hired somebody to help you understand your finances?

Speaker A:

Have you hired somebody to do your taxes?

Speaker A:

Have you hired a bookkeeper?

Speaker A:

Have you hired an email marketing person, whatever it is, right?

Speaker A:

Have you hired, have you brought on somebody else in your company to take on a position that you did not feel comfortable doing or that you didn't want to do?

Speaker A:

Congrats.

Speaker A:

That's a CEO decision.

Speaker A:

Right?

Speaker A:

And so I hope by now that you're, you're seeing and you're feeling, like, excited, like, I, I mean, like, I get this, like, excitement that, like, stirs up from my stomach when I see people like, yes, yes.

Speaker A:

Own that freaking role.

Speaker A:

And then I also want you to, like I said before in that example I gave you with a client, is that understand too, that being a CEO or embracing that role is not about knowing everything.

Speaker A:

It is not about knowing everything.

Speaker A:

Sometimes embracing that role is saying, I don't know about this, so I need to hire somebody.

Speaker A:

I need to bring on help.

Speaker A:

It's not about knowing everything.

Speaker A:

I have so many people say, but I don't know business.

Speaker A:

I've never been a business owner.

Speaker A:

That's okay.

Speaker A:

You can take the time.

Speaker A:

There are courses that you can take, There are coaches that you can hire.

Speaker A:

There are strategists like me.

Speaker A:

I'm, I'm.

Speaker A:

This again, remember, this is my skill set.

Speaker A:

I don't, I do not claim to be a graphic designer.

Speaker A:

I do not claim to be a web designer.

Speaker A:

That those are not my skill sets.

Speaker A:

Not a copywriter.

Speaker A:

I'm not a lawyer.

Speaker A:

Right?

Speaker A:

I'm not a cpa.

Speaker A:

I have a little bit of financial knowledge, but I'm by no means a cpa.

Speaker A:

I don't try to own that.

Speaker A:

My skill is in business.

Speaker A:

So, yes, it comes, quote, unquote, easy for me to embrace this role a little bit, because that is my skill set.

Speaker A:

But I don't have other skills.

Speaker A:

You have other skills that I don't have.

Speaker A:

Remember to start your list embracing your inner CEO.

Speaker A:

And every single time you make a decision for the betterment of your company, I want you to note it.

Speaker A:
